Upping My Game
To be quite frank, this girl’s got no game.
In the food photography department anyway. I took some time off this past weekend and decided to see what I could do with a limited budget and crap I already have.
Saturday I took a trip to some of my favorite places. Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx and JoAnn Fabrics. I could literally spend an entire day in each one of these places. But, I didn’t have time for that Saturday. I really wanted to get back home as soon as possible to start cleaning out one of the spare bedrooms that was filled with junk. My aim was to give myself some space to take some decent photos of my work. (My work? Who the hell do I think I am?)
Anyway, I grabbed two pieces of foam core poster board, one white and one black. I also picked up two pieces of regular old black poster board. That ran me about $10.99 including tax. JoAnn had two coupons good on Saturday – one for 40% off and one for 60% off. Winning. I stopped in at TJ Maxx and went straight for the housewares section. I can literally find something cool every single time I go in there. This time I found a few things for props. A beautiful wood stand that was on clearance. Two recycled glass bowls and the small white rectangular plate you see in the picture.
I got home early afternoon and started tearing through the bedroom liked a lunatic. I threw out 3 bags of garbage. How do we accumulate so much stuff?? I organized house decorations and my baking supplies. It still needs a bit more work but I can walk around the room and that feels great. We have an old bar table with stools that we had in the kitchen before Andy made me the cart. So I put that by the window and set up my cheap DIY photo booth.
I had taken Monday off and had plans to make some cupcakes for a birthday party at work. It is wonderful working in a fairly large clinic/hospital. There is never a shortage of people or celebrations to bake for! The top flavors they requested were chocolate and anything raspberry filled. So obviously I mashed the two together and made Chocolate Cupcakes with Raspberry Curd Filling and Swiss Meringue Buttercream. I left half of the buttercream vanilla and made the other half chocolate. I just couldn’t decide which flavor to go with!
I made the dangerous trek upstairs to the spare bedroom and snapped a few pics before I lost daylight. Here are the preliminary results.
Not too shabby for a first timer on a budget with an old camera! I’m sure there are still things that aren’t quite right but I’m still proud of it. And the most important thing of all is that the cupcakes were phenomenal!
