Simple Is Best
Sometimes I just want to make something simple, classic and delicious.
And nothing fits the bill better than Rice Krispies Treats. I mean seriously. If you don’t love these gooey bars we can’t be friends.
I mean we could. But the friendship would be tainted from the start.
For Halloween I made some Rice Krispies Treats and added a couple things just to try something different. Cut to my husband rolling his eyes here. He hates when I try something different. Why change it when everyone loves it the way it is? My thought is that you just never know when you’re going to stumble on something that changes your world.
So, I decided to add some fun Halloween jimmies to the mix along with clear vanilla extract. The magic liquid that makes all thing “funfetti-fied”. I also got a little crazy and made some Birthday Cake Crumb to add in as well. If you aren’t familiar with Birthday Cake Crumb let me fill you in. It was developed in the brilliant mind of Christina Tosi of Milk Bar. I was gifted the Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook by my mother-in-law and the recipe for the Birthday Cake Crumb, Cake and Cookies are in there. And they are all to die for. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and make one of her cakes. Yes, they may look intimidating and have several steps, however you can do things in stages and the cake tastes better after it’s been frozen. So you can make it ahead! If you don’t have the time for a cake, make the Birthday Cake Cookies. These are Andy’s favorite. For someone who doesn’t like sweets, he cannot resist these when they come out of the oven!
Anyway, I made a couple batches of the Crumb and tossed that together with the Rice Krispies. After that, it was all classic recipe from there. (Except for a little extra butter and marshmallows. I figured I had to compensate for the additional mix-ins!) Andy took some to school and I took some to work. They all disappeared. Apparently people were grilling Andy all day about how they could get their hands on more! So that was a win.
This weekend I still had cereal left. And a bunch of Oreos in the house. What to do, what to do? Yes, that’s right, Oreo Rice Krispies Treats. These were even easier than the Birthday Cake Treats! Chop up some Oreos and mix them with the Rice Krispies. Follow the directions for the classic Rice Krispies Treats. Again, I added more butter and marshmallows since I was adding the Oreos. I got all fancy and melted some dark chocolate and drizzled it over the top of the cut bars. Beautiful. And most importantly delicious!
