Happy New Year & A Cake
So, it’s 2017. Whoopiddydoo!
I’m kidding, kind of. I just don’t get it. All the hubbub about a new year. To me, it’s simply another day. I don’t like making resolutions. If I can’t make something happen during the year on any given day chances are, making a resolution about it isn’t going to help me.
Everyone’s always like, yeah, I’m going to eat better! I’m going to be healthy! And then they binge drink and are hungover, shamefully going through the McDonald’s drive thru hoping that the grease from the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese will coat their stomach enough that the sandwich won’t make a “reappearance” later. I mean, not that that’s ever happened to me before. So much for resolutions.
If I had to make one, it would be to just try to be a better human being this year. Maybe a little more compassionate toward others and a little more forgiving of myself. Huh.. You may be thinking that I’m not too bad at making resolutions after all. What you won’t see is me, driving to work tomorrow, screaming profanities at everyone in a fit of road rage. We’re all human. We all have our faults!
I am going to forgive myself for throwing a cake in the garbage last night. Yep, I did it. Truth is, I thought it looked gorgeous and I took pictures of it. However, the taste left MUCH to be desired. I was not a fan. Andy was not a fan. The only fan of the cake was Lars. And frankly, he eats his own (and other animals) shit. So he can’t be trusted. I had a few things in mind this past weekend. I knew I wanted to try out a buttermilk cake recipe. Mainly because I had copious amounts of buttermilk laying around my fridge from the holiday. So waffles and a cake were on the docket to use it up. I also wanted to try out some buttercream flowers. I’ve seen these pretty little things everywhere and I recently purchased an actual set of piping tips in their own case. The random tips I currently own (read: no less than half a dozen 1M tips, my favorite) have been haphazardly lovingly thrown into a Mason Jar after each use. It was high time I organize myself. I also bought a set of the Russian piping tips you’ve probably seen popping up everywhere for the last two years. Yes, I’m a little behind the times. Haven’t tried those yet.
So, back to the cake. It baked up just fine. I cut off the tops to level it and it tasted pretty good. Then I did a crumb coat and threw it in the fridge. I thought maybe I would put my buttercream flowers on but wasn’t sure how those were going to turn out so I left my options open. The flowers turned out better than I expected for my first time.
I should say, the ones that made it on the baking tray, turned out better than I expected. I did start to get frustrated at a certain point so I did the smart thing and quit while I was ahead.
I did those Saturday. Fast forward to Sunday. I didn’t especially like how the buttercream I used on the cake had turned out so I decided to whip up a batch of vanilla buttercream and try my hand at a rosette cake. The result turned out well. I took pictures and overall was pretty please with it. Then I tasted it. It wasn’t bad, per se. It was just, nothing. It tasted like nothing. So after deliberating what to do, I salvaged the buttercream I had piped on and I’m saving that for another round of flower making. The cake went in the trash. And I don’t even feel bad about it.
Look at me! Here I am, sticking to my resolution, forgiving myself for the cake mistake! Shit happens. What’s important is that it photographed well and I even managed to sneak in the photos before dark! Yeah me!
Hope your resolutions last longer than mine! Happy New Year!
Ann

I’ve been meaning to try the Russian tips as well but have yet to do so. Interested to hear what you think. I’ve thrown many of a random cookie in the trash as well. Shit happen!! Lol
They are huge compared to most of mine. I bought a set of 28 tips. Probably overkill to just try something but it was a good deal. I’m working on getting the buttercream to a decent consistency. I’ll let you know what happens!!
Hi Ann, I am getting married June 24th and your sister Caitlin recommended you. I am interested in cupcakes and a small cake. Is there an email or another route I could contact you with for additional information?
Thanks,
