Marble Cake and Barn Wood

I realize those two things may not sound like they go together. What do Marble Cake and barn wood have in common? Nothing.
No, seriously. Nothing. I just couldn’t think of a catchy title for this post.
I’ve been itching to get my reclaimed barn wood cupcake tiers out for some time. I just love the look of them so much. Short of having a party solely to justify the use of a cupcake tower, there hasn’t really been an opportunity to bust them out. So I made an opportunity.
I baked a marble cake this weekend and tested out some Bake-Even strips. I wanted to give the strips a whirl since I hate trying to slice the domed top off of a cake. It NEVER works out for me. My handwriting is always slanted and so is the cut I make when I try to make cake layers even.
All of the cakes I bake are in 6 inch pans. This wouldn’t have been a problem if I wasn’t in a hurry and read the contents of the package. I bought the Wilton brand since that was my only option in the store. My husband was in the truck waiting for me so I wanted to get in and get out. When I got home, I realized that yes, the package does have 6 strips in it however, there are two strips of each size. Ranging from 10″ to 35″. Being the moron I am I threw one of the big ones in the water to soak along with the mid-size 25″ strips. Well, since this wrapped around a good portion of my 6 inch pan twice, the cake didn’t quite bake up the same as the others. And I took it out before it was done. Ugh… Fail…
So, my cake is only two tiers. It’s also not as “marbled” as I would have liked. But, these things are all fixable the next go round. The cake was delicious. The recipe I used was from King Arthur Flour’s White Russian Cake. I only followed the cake portion of the recipe. The cake is frosted and filled with a simple vanilla buttercream. I should also mention that since I was using three 6″ round cake tins and the recipe is for a three tier 8″ cake, I made cupcakes as well just to see how they would turn out.
Now, for the barn wood. Well, actually it’s wood from an old corn crib. Those of who aren’t from the mid-west, a corn crib is something used to dry and store corn. You may have seen the cupcake tiers before in these photos from a wedding I did last year. For this cake I only used the smallest tier. I just love how that wood looks. I can’t wait till I get to use these again!
